At Theory to Table, we believe food has the power to bring people together. Cooking transforms simple ingredients into something meaningful—something that can be shared, remembered, and celebrated.

Friends gather around a rustic kitchen counter, chopping fresh herbs and preparing a vibrant salad and pizza with colorful ingredients.

For me, that belief began in my own childhood kitchen with my father. When I was little, he would pick me up and place me on the countertop so I could watch him cook. The kitchen quickly became my favorite place in the house because it was where I could spend time with him.

As I grew older, I eventually climbed down from the counter and began helping. I started by chopping vegetables and taking on small tasks, slowly earning my place as his sous chef at home. Over time, he taught me the skills and confidence to begin cooking on my own. What started as simply watching my father became a lifelong love of cooking, food, and the connection that happens when people prepare a meal together.

I lost my father last year, and his absence is a tremendous loss. Yet carrying on his love of food and cooking still makes me feel connected to him. Every familiar recipe, every lesson I pass along, and every moment spent in the kitchen keeps a part of his memory present.

Today, I cook with my own three children, who have now become my sous chefs. Watching them measure, mix, chop, learn, and laugh beside me reminds me of the time I spent with my father. The kitchen continues to be a place where love is expressed, memories are created, and family traditions are carried from one generation to the next.

Even small challenges, such as a missing ingredient or a recipe that does not go as planned, can become opportunities to work together, laugh, adapt, and create a memorable story. These moments often become just as meaningful as the meal itself.

Cooking also allows people to show love through action. Preparing someone’s favorite dish, teaching a treasured family recipe, or accommodating a dietary need communicates care in a deeply personal way. These thoughtful gestures remind the people around us that they are seen, valued, and included.

When families and friends prepare meals together, they deepen their relationships, preserve traditions, strengthen communication, and create a greater sense of belonging. A recipe may begin with ingredients, but the most meaningful result is often the connection created along the way.

Some of life’s most memorable moments are not only found in what we serve, but in the stories told, the laughter shared, the lessons learned, and the love experienced around the table.
